Default snake id, can anyone help?

hi all, are there any snake experts amongst you?
i came across this snake last year in bulgaria. i had nipped out for an hours bird watch whilst on holiday in golden sands. i was walking through the woods near to the aladja monastry, when i heard a rustle next to my feet. at first i thought it was a bird tossing leaves about. when i looked down, i saw this snake very near to my feet. i must have disturbed it, though i had'nt seen it. well, after a few seconds panic (i don't like snakes!), i realised it was probably more scared of me.... though i took some convincing!!
i got a couple of shots of it, but to this day have no idea what type of snake it is. can you help please?
cheers, andrew.
