Equipment: Nothing but my notebook which is one of the most important parts of birding. To go out without it (which I only ever did once) is like going out without your pants on. I've never understood why I responded to the 'Cameras and Equipment' question in this way because in reality I own a Leica Telescope with eyepieces, Zeiss Binoculars, and a Manfrotto Tripod all of which cost a positive fortune.

Default Whitethroat

A juvenile Whitethroat still showing some 'fluffy' feathers and its young (though closed in this image) wide gape.

Pete.

Well spotted Pete, and what a beautiful little bird. Am I right in thinking that the whitethroat is a summer migrant............... if so it would be lovely if it spent it's summer holidays with me

Yes a summer visitor Babs. They are often on the tops of brambles and such like dense cover where they nest, their song is a kind of 'scratchy chatter'. There is also a Lesser Whitethroat which is a bit difficult to seperate until you get used to seeing them, its song is much different to the other one and they can be rather secretive.

Nice capture Pete.

Here are a couple of whitethroat song recordings, they can be quite different.

Thanks for the recordings Rolf. Not heard the first example but recognise the second. I'm now curious about the different song of the Whitethroat and shall now refer to my books/tapes.

Pete.
