I have a feeling that this isn't a dragon fly but a nasty little.......... big sort of fly . It has the eyes of a fly rather than those of a dragonfly. I will consult my books after I have arrived home tomorrow

Yes, I had a look last night Chocky, the body is too short and hairy for a Dragonfly, but couldn't find anything else which would match.

Ok - I've narrowed it down - it's a robber-fly. Not sure which one yet as they can look quite different, but there are some who look just like this.
