Default Tawny or Barn Owl ?

My son says this is an Owl looking down at me
I captured it last yaer when I first used my NikonD50 and hadn't a clue how to use it (Not that I have now) But I put it all on automatic and thought that was that. I didn't know you had to extend the lens, I thought that was auto as well.
So , when I captured this owl it was along way off. What a shame I have never seen him since. He looked like an Owl any how, he has jolly thicklegs.

Ha ha ha . Really.
I wondered why it had a dark edging at the top . It was the colouring on the sides like the wing parts that made me think it was and Owl.
