CC/webcam help
How can one set up a web cam to record the goings on outside one's house would this require a mega amount of space on the computer?
Alternatively I have a spare Camcorder that could be used at most that would only record 2 hours. If set up to show on a small TV which channel would it use.?
With out added expense other than extension cable
Is this a job for superman or could I do any of this myself ? please
If you use a Web cam, then you will only be able to record it on your computer, but all you need is a USB extension lead. If you want to be able to record on a VCR and watch a camera on your TV, then you will need a camera with a composite video output, loads of them on ebay. Most videos will record in LP mode, so you would get more than two hours.
If you want to watch it through the TV erial input, then you need one with an RF modulator.
Oh. I think I could do that with USB extension lead.
I did have an RF converter lead or suchlike with an old Cannon camcorder and was able to set it up to a channel on the TV.(long time ago. Don't think it could record though) I knew some thing like that would be needed , I couldn't think of it's name.
I was just thinking it would be nice to see who has called and who is at the door when the bell rings, with out looking out, as every one who visits looks straight up to the window.

Sounds like the webcam USB extension lead will do the trick then.
Yep. Some thing of interest for me to do one rainy day. I have a spare PC too. but that would take up a bit more of my lounge and it looks more like an office any way with the craft work I do. (More like a tip)

LOL, wasn't suggesting that you necessarily buy them from ebay Chocky, just using them as illustrations.

Looked very very interesting. I have never dabbled in electronics. was fitting light bulbs and changing plugs etc at the age f 6 annything electrical but mot electronic. Used to take every thing apart. lol. I always got it back together .

The most expertise that is required for fitting one of those sets, is the ability to push a few little connectors together.
Ok. I have taken screen prints . Now where does one buy those. I mean what sort of shop?
This shop carries them, have bought a few things from them.
Not a bad price really but you said some thing about a camera with a composite video output Dose that go with this.
Just thinking Matt might be able to help when he comes down with more time to spare.
He knows how to set up sky cables to all of the room in the house. You know like you said for my kitchen TV.

Yes it does, it can connect by a phono lead (some TVs have a phono video input on the side or front under a flap), ro a scart to phono lead.
Here's a bigger picture of the unit, you would also need a couple of power supplies, or one power supply and use a PP9 for the remote camera.
I have bookmarked those pages but it's a lot to take in. That last one look really good.
Think I'll talk to Matt when he comes down . Thing is he'll know why I want it and he'll laugh and tell me I'm silly.
which web cam would you recommend as a good on. As you deal in cams I would think you know a good one.
Mine is about 10 years old. it's a Logitech. I have been toying with buying a new one

No, I have two, one is a little basic one and the other I got recently, it is similar to the one I mention above. I have a proper IP camera for surveillance.
Oh well yes i suppose that is easy to set up . how did you get it to work on your ipaq at the restaurant the other day. did you have to dial in on the phone.
Sorry but you have introduced me to some thing very interesting and although at the moment a little beyond me I am very intrigued. Any thing to do with cameras and making films has been an interest for many years. I'm always making films.
That was my IP cam, they are quite expensive, but you can do a similar thing with a webcam.
And can I view it on my phone ?
This is interesting I'm going to look into this (the cheapest way, probably web cam way) and see what I can rig up. be nice to see what goes on whilst I'm out.
We also have some good car smashes and car doors taken off by silly people who don't look first. I'll have to see it there is a 'How too' site

Unfortunatey I have a birthday coming up very soon.
Most of the good ones are around £30, but there are a few different ways of doing it. I personally prefer the limited access live webcam, but some use a refreshed jpeg, so you get a still picture every 20 seconds or so.
Oh £30 is no prob . I don't want stills.
I'm going to set some thing up and work on it if you catch me. I'll build it as I go sort of thing. I'm going to play with the idea tomorrow. Got a couple of ideas just extended my tripod , it's taller than me. Might have a go at using a camcorder and play the tape later for starters. I have a draw full of leads 'spect non of them will be of use . Will get an USB2 extension tomorrow. ( I get discount) .

I know who to ask about things now.

I also have a brand new VHS recorder siting in it's box under my bed now I should be able to do some thing with that and some of the equipment you were talking about. RF thingy.

There is also a small unit available which will only start recording on the video when there is movement in front of the camera, so a tape could last for longer than 24hrs.
That sounds interesting. like a shadow tracer sort of thing. We have a security light at the back that triggers by activation.
I'll have to use a small cam because the porch canopy almost touches my windowsill may look into a wireless web cam, my lounge is about 20 ft long and my PC is this end and there are two very big telescopes by the window. so will look into a wireless cam today , if Clark would answer the phone. don't think he has turned up. They miss me I was soooooo reliable, never let them down. Actually I don't remember ever letting any one down
I'll look into that later today.
