Green Woodpecker
This very handsome gentleman called to dine yesterday.
His large, thick beak and those neck muscles must be really strong as the ground is very hard just now.
However, he stayed much longer than usual - about 10 mins I guess, and seemed to find what he was looking for down there!
-
Superb Catherine, I know that they love ants, you must have a load running around your lawn.:) Not ever seen any in our garden, although there are a couple about, as I often hear them.
-
Great pics. I am so jealous I have never been able to get that close to a greenwoodpecker.
-
Thanks, gentlemen!
They visit the garden often, but it's usually very early in the morning, and there's never a camera around then.
They are easily disturbed, but this one stayed around for ages - until he was spooked by a Woodpigeon!;)
-
Bloody Woodpigeons - it's always them!!!!!
That's a fantastic visit - I didn't know that they poked around in the soil too. I love the colours - like an aged velvet.

It was back again yesterday morning.
Unfortunately I only had my old camera handy, but I think you will still be able to see the bird on the rhs of the Oak trunk!:)

I have been given Glen's permission* to add these pics to the thread!
He took them at the same time as I took the first pics here, on 16th August. Of course, he has a Nikon D60, AND he was downstairs with the GW coming nearer to the house by then......... Anyway, they're clearer than my pics so I thought you'd like to see them!:)
*Threats of no roast beef or trifle tonight if he wouldn't allow me to post them!;)

- and here are another 4!
The Green Woodpecker zig-zagged down the lawn towards the water dish and enjoyed a drink!:)
-
Lovely shots Catherine, Glen's done well there.:)
-
A really nice set of shots - all angles!
..and I love the threats - I do the same, it's very effective ;)
-
Thanks, folks! I shall pass on your comments!:)
He really should join to post his own pics, but isn't keen on the writing bit..., so I guess we'll have to keep it a joint effort!)

The GW called several times this morning. Each time he flew down from the Oak tree (top of first pic) and made for the water dish!:)
(I must clean those windows today though - just so I can get better pics!)
-
Nice shots again Catherine, would love to have one visiting my Garden.:)

 Fairly sure your Green Woodpecker is Imature Male, my book says they are mottled and a little dull like that in Autumn when they grow new feathers and are then the same as adults

Thanks, Philip! You are most probably right about that. 'He' is quite a noisy bird!:)
