great close ups. a few years ago i was in bulgaria. one particular day the sky was thick....and i mean thick, with hawkers. it was a spectacular site.
Tanks andy :)
I expect it was a site to see. I have seen similar
Great photos, Beryl!
Could you tell me if this one is the same type? It seemed to be holding its wings at a strange angle. Maybe it had just acquired them? (There were lots of Damselflies and Dragonflies at Exbury on Wednesday!:))
Good shot. Well done :)
That is the female Emperor. The largest recorded in UK.
The male is Blue and older females are green and blue
Here is a good site for ID though it doesn't have all of them
Cheshire Odonata species list
Gosh! It didn't look at all like the one we rescued from the conservatory, being all green and brown with no blue at all! It was much smaller than the earlier sighting too.
I was sure it was the same as yours here!
Actually I think it's a female common darter Catherine But I can't be 100% sure

Have changed the title o this thread a the dragonfly is a newly emerged Southern hawker and thus much lighter with bi-coloured legs. It is actually a Teneral
As it reaches adulthood it's legs will turn black and a will turn a richer darker colour.
Sorry for any confusion
And here he is Almost and adult one week later . I captured this today in the same place as the newly emerged one above. so it has to be the same chap as they are extremely territorial
Lovely shots beryl lots of really clear detail
Thanks Joe :)
