Why have you never seen a Comma butterfly before Rolf ?

Just haven't Pete. I have only recently started seeking butterflies out for photographs. :)

It was just that I wondered what the status was of the Comma down there with you and thought perhaps your reply may have been that they were so rare that this was the first you saw, though in truth I didn't really think this was the case hence the curiousity of why you hadn't seen one before got the better of me.
Good luck with your future photographs of butterflies if you just got interested in them......great subjects for photography as your trio of pics here clearly illustrate......excellent.

Like all of these things Pete, once you get into them, you wonder why you haven't before, they make beautiful subjects for photographs, if somewhat difficult to capture sometimes. :)
Off over to France in a week or so and hope to catch a few nice ones there. :)

In the 19th century the British population of comma butterflies crashed, and by 1920 there were only two sightings. The cause for this decline is unknown, and from about 1930 the population recovered and it is now one of the more familiar butterflies ( Wikipedia)
They are not considered to be an endangered species now
I personally hope you do get some butterfly pics in France, some we don't see in the UK perhaps.
