Heard that there were a couple of these at the Woolhampton pit, managed to get a few photos, not the best, but adequately show the markings on these transitional birds, two adults and a juvenile.

Fascinating birds, Rolf!
They resemble Little Grebes, but I guess they are bigger.
The red eyes are very evident, and the 'fan' of feathers near the eye is really unusual.

Yes, they do look similar, certainly the juveniles and are a little bigger.
