Large Yellow Underwing moth - Noctua pronuba

I had a few problems ID'ing this as it is a much richer brown than a lot of photos, and although the flash can alter the colour, this one looked rich by eye as well. But it can apparently vary, and there are some shots as rich as this... also, you can just see the underwing in the second shot.

He's a handsome chap Louise, shame their colours are seldom seen.

Woke up at 6 this morning and saw a very large moth on the ceiling, thinking when I get up I'll get a photo. Unfortunately forgot and when I woke up again at 7:30 I opened the curtains and the thing flew off.

That's so frustrating. If you had a man-servant you could call him to come and take it for you whilst you went back to sleep
