Stock doves are rather like, and often mistaken for, feral rock pigeons. This is a shame as they are a quite beautiful and distinct species. Over half the European population of stock doves are found in the UK's towns and cities, and the population is still growing. Unlike their urban cousins, stock doves nest in the countryside or on coastal cliffs, away from disturbance by people. The well developed throat sac (called a crop) is used to store lots of food quickly and provides what's called pigeon's milk that feeds the chicks.
