Post Stricken vessel, Llanddulas, north Wales coast / Llongddrylliad, Llanddulas, arfordir gogledd Cymru

Having seen the severity of the weather conditions RSPB Cymru is relieved that the seven crew members were airlifted to safety last night. But, the conservation charity remains anxious that any oil spill resulting from the grounding of this vessel will have serious consequences for the internationally important numbers of birds in the area.

The pictures of this at low tide today were surreal, the whole ship up on the beach.

It reminded me of seeing the shadow of the Hengist stranded on Folkestone beach when we returned to Dover from Boulogne on the night of 'the hurricane'. @#!: Hengist Beached 1987

They'd sent The Princess Anne to France to collect us as The Swift couldn't fight against the wind - still not realising how bad the weather was to become. That night, the captain of Briatin's biggest hovercraft piloted it in a loop almost past the harbour entrance before turning to approach it straight on.

I remember him telling us that he was called Captain Lyon and that the sea was a 'bit choppy', but he'd try to 'iron it out' for us!

Vehicles on the inner deck were attached to great anchoring hoops, and all we could hear from that area was the rattling of chains, as if some wild animals were trying to get loose.

Goodness knows what it must have been like for those Polish sailors last night!
