Tasmanian devils are the largest carnivorous marsupials. They are restricted to Tasmania, where their population has plummeted by 60% in recent years owing to a deadly epidemic of facial cancer. Haunted by its chilling nocturnal screeches, early European settlers gave the Tasmanian devil its alarming name. Despite its fierce reputation, it has a rather shy, cautious disposition. They emit their blood-curdling shrieks and theatrical growling only when threatened, or in competition with other devils for food.
