What hope have we got of saving these wonderful birds when elements on these key migratory stop off islands cannot be trusted to not shoot them. Cyprus is even worse, the practice of trapping thousands of songbirds and eating them cooked whole is thriving in the rural areas.

They'll shoot anything, if you read the end of the article, they needed to treat many raptors for gunshot wounds and I'm sure that there are many which have been shot and not counted..

Sorry - I didn't see that the heading was an active link...

Malta is in the EU, and surely under legal obligation to protect these birds. Does the EU not have any laws governing wildlife which would help?

Our neighbours left yesterday for a week's holiday there. Must ask them if they witnessed anything relevant.

Yes they do have an obligation, but unfortunately and like with Cyprus, they have been doing it for so long that they feel it is their right to do it and you'll probably find that the local police will turn a blind eye. The truth is that the majority, even in the UK, have no interest whatsoever in conservation of birds and wildlife.
