Summer is a coming so a good tiime to remind ourselves of some of the delights of the balmy (hopefully) days ahead with this picture of the Painted Lady butterfly.

Somewhere in my records I have a count of a three figure number of this species of butterfly seen on the path to the Allan Hide at Leighton Moss on a summers day many years ago now Rolf. Hope I can find it to quote the acurate number. I never did or have seen as many, and truthfully never expect to again. By the way my best count to date of the equally beautiful Clouded Yellow in a single hour was 12 in 2006. I'd love you to be able to tell me of anyone who has been able to photograph this butterfly feeding/at rest on a plant, I'm sure they have, but I am convinced this creature can smell anything heading towards it at which point it is back on the wing and away.

Chocky don't tell me......iv'e just seen your pic of the Clouded Yellow on the Wellenkamp website......excellent/brilliant/beautiful......eat your heart out Mr Woodruff and do some more research in future before you open your big mouth.

I wasn't sure if this would have fit better elsewhere but here goes.
Iv'e just seen your video clip of the 'Redshank with indigestion' Chocky. I'm sure you was only joking with the title so hope you don't think I lost my sense of humour and I'm certainly not trying to be smart or clever. But did you know this jerking the head - or perhaps you could describe it as the whole body - back and forth is part of the Redshanks behaviour. Many birds have some curious characteristics like this Redshank. Perhaps I will post some more as we go along.

Yes some body told me , it's the same with the Kingfisher and also the wagtails. I have a nice little ballet of the pied wagtails.
P.S. The butterfly in the video is of the painted lady sipping
That's a lovely capture Pete and in a lovely setting.
I am not very up on butterflies but I know the red admiral and the comma. I usually have to refer to my ref book for the id's.
That was hec of an amount of butterflies all in one place at leighton moss, I bet it was a beautiful sight.
