The crown stripe mentioned on the other thread Beryl is clearly seen in these two images of the bird's in flight, in particular the second one. Incidentally, all five pics of the Whimbrel are very good and if you look closely at them all you can see the smaller less curved bill and crown stripe on them all......excellent.

    Yes. Thanks Pete.
As I said in the other thread I did know some thing was different but gave the difference to it being summer.
I will edit the title to Whimbrel.
There were about a dozen in all

The equipment I use is a Canon 30D with Sigma 50-500mm lens. I also have a garden hide from which I take most of my pictures.

nice shots beryl, we get a good influx of whimbrel through preston around this time of year. they come up the ribble estuary in good numbers.
i remember a few years back we had a large flock, on several nights, at a working quarry by the m6 motorway junction for preston. the workings are now finished and the site is having a big cash injection, by the lancashire wildlife trust, to turn it into a large nature reserve. ( its called brockholes quarry) when i worked nights, i used to stop off on the way to see the whimbrel.
