    I got out my 'Mushrooms and Fungi' book, Beryl, and thought it looked exactly like one illustrated there and known as Polyporus Squamosa - the Dryad's saddle* or pheasant's back mushroom;
    Polyporus squamosus, dryad's saddle or pheasant's back mushroom, Tom Volk's Fungus of the Month for May 2001

    It will seemingly kill the tree - but it is edible for us!

    *Thought you'd like this name, being from another myth!

    Yep. Looks Identical Catherine . Thanks.
    The tree you see is cut just where the fungi is growing so ti is already dead
