Some Canadian birds
Just back from a 3 week trip across Canada. Ive managed to get a few nice pics of the birds out there so maybe you can identify them for me :D
First up Taken in Toronto its a gull with a prominent bluish stripe on its bill. Size was maybe a little smaller than a UK Herring Gull.

Next a blackbird sized critter spotted at Niagra Falls.

Not the sharpest pic I'll ever take but forgive me as I was photographing through the carriage window of a moving train and I only saw it a split second before shooting. Anyway its a Bald Eagle. Loads of them on the Banff - Vancouver section of the trip :)
-
The gull looks like a Ring-billed Gull, although not certain, but the second bird is a Blackbird, Nth American variety.:)
PS. Welcome back Ross, from your facebook bulletins, sounds like you had a great time.:)
-
Not much like a UK blackbird is it? :) The bill is much more delicate for starters
Got pics for various sections when I have a few minutes - some lovely weather vanes around Whistler for starters :D
Canada is great, although expensive due to the poor exchange rate - its dropped from 2.5 dollars to the £ to 1.6 in a year.
-
Look forward to seeing them Ross. I actually thought it was a type of Jackdaw from the first picture, as the beak looks heavier than a UK Blackbird, but the second picture is typical of a thrush.
-
That second bird is a Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus)
-
Apparently the American Blackbird doesn't have a nice song like ours - Yay, British Blackbird!! :)
Nice to see some foreign birds, especially a Bald Eagle since it's the US national Bird, and since I only ever think of the Bald Eagle on the Muppets :-rolling

How about these for Osprey nests? The size of the one on the bridge can be judged by the Osprey perched on the top of it!
Both snapped through the carriage windows on the Banff - Vancouver train

Some sort of big herons. All pictured around the Vancouver/Victoria area on the west coast

I think this one is a Nutcracker of some kind. Photo'd at the Colombia Icefields cafe between Jasper & Banff. He was very tame and loved the discarded pizza someone had dropped. No fear of humans at all and quite happily hopped up to with a few inches of us

And I havent got the faintest idea what this colourful critter is! Roughly blackbird sized, it was phot'd at Whistler
-
Well the last birds are North American Robins, the Herons look like Great Blue Herons, but not sure about the middle ones.:)
-
Nice collection  Thanks for sharing :)

Those Osprey nests are fantastic - but I do love the Heron on top of the totem pole :-rolling
