Was over in Lightwater yesterday when looking up I saw a female Sparrowhawk, then a male, quite distinctly different in size. They performed mock combat for a couple of minutes before flying out of sight, was really great to watch through the binoculars.:)
Great experience, Rolf! I don't think I have ever seen a male and female Sparrowhawk anywhere near each other!
Maybe that's partly because when they're not rearing young they compete for food?
It was one of those being in the right place at the right time and looking skyward moments Catherine, I've very rarely seen individuals in flight, so to catch a pair was fantastic.:)
What a serendipitous happening, must have been great to watch. I saw a couple of Red Kites flying about on Friday, but not actually doing anything, just keeping together.
