this great white egret has been holdaying in sunny lancashire for the last few weeks and is still here to date.
this fine specimen has turned up at leighton moss r.s.p.b reserve in silverdale. this is around 35 miles north of where i live in preston.
i visited the reserve on 29th of august to see this egret . it was a first for me. these birds are normally found in s.e. europe. so how it comes to be in lancs is anyones guess. there have been aound 4 different great white egret sightings over britain at the same time. apart from our egret, there were separate birds in wales and over in east yorkshire.
along with this great white egret, there was also 3 spoonbills and at least 23 little egrets present. it was good to compare the size difference between great and little egrets in the field. great egrets are grey heron size.
