Since Catherine mentioned to me ages ago about Blackcaps loving Banana, I've never actually got them to eat them, well until now that is.
Strange, no other birds seem to touch them.
Excellent.
Maybe they have to be rotten first
Nope, he started eating them straight away, nice fresh Banana end.
Oh. That's good. Expensive though Mind you if you shared a nana you were eating any way it wouldn't be
I give up on birds and what they supposedly like, it never seems to work, so I just put all sorts out until I see what my ones will take.
You know, I have NEVER been able to get a Blackbird to eat apple (well, no bird at at all), even during the snow, yet everyone keeps taking shots of them. The fruit always just sits there going off until I give in and chuck them away. Honestly, they've not even tasted it.
i saw a thing online i think about a uk grown banana they were just showing it to the photographer opened it -- and a robin flew down and nicked some, so maybe they like it too...
As for apples i have a macaw and he wont eat his fruit like a good boy, normally ends up decorating his cage..
But to be fair, Billy - all birds seem to decorate, whatever they are eating
At last I have a believer and a convert, Rolf!
Well done, Rolf! Now you know they'll take them, you can place them anywhere you can get an even better shot of them eating it! (Not that these photos aren't great as they are...)
Blackbirds also eat bananas - when the Blackcaps allow them to. I've even watched a Greenfinch enjoy a bite or two! (Mind you, that was just after I'd taken a photo of him nibbling at fatballs also...) I still put over-ripe bananas on the bird table in winter, and by the peckings along their lengths, something is eating them...
Beryl, if you're eating a banana, cut off both ends (with a little fruit inside) and stick those on a strong but slender branch of any shrub. Bananas are really cheap nowadays. I often buy a bunch for 99p in Tesco - especially for the birds..
Please excuse me adding those photos from January and February 2007. I really miss 'my' Blackcaps, and doubt if the new owners of our old house will care to feed any birds... if the state of our old garden now is anything to go by...
P.S. Last week I got a feeder free with fatballs, so I put apples inside it and hung it up over a basket. (See photo below) My idea was that it would be a treat for our Blackbirds. However, I've not seen any of that species eat the fruit, although Blue Tits and Great Tits seem to love it! (Perhaps I haven't seen them eat any before because they don't like to feed on the ground?)
In photo 2 he is eating it Catherine, unfortunately I haven't had any real time during daylight to take photos, so had to make do with a quickly snatched couple.
Won't put too many out,. as I only have the one Blackcap and they just go rotten.
Like the apple idea, will get one of those feeders and give it a try.
