This one was lucky as it was on the path and I only spotted it because it moved... or I would have stepped on it.
Caterpillars can be difficult, and quite a few look like this one, but I think that it may well be a Flame Shoulder for the following reasons( the first 2 being the key) :
- None of the others that I spotted seem to have the yellow side stripe (FS under is pale ochreous)
- Double brooded so does have larvae in September (some only have single broods earlier in the year)
- a FM is 35-35mm long
- FM Occupies woodland fringes (which is where this was found)
I may very well be wrong, but this is a good candidate I think
