Captured today in a tree in Exmouth
This is a male. He has a red cap
Well captured Chocky.
Thank you.
They are very difficult . They don't stay still and keep so high
Well spotted, the juvenile has the red cap on the top of it's head Chocky and the male has the red at the bottom of the neck on the back of it's head, hope you don't mind me mentioning it
No. I don't.
I only knew that the female has no red on it's head
Does this one help?

Yep looks like it could possibly be a male because it has some black feathers showing through on the top of it's head and then red on the back of the neck. The juvenile in my garden is now growing black feathers on it's head but not yet noticed any red showing through on the neck so mine may be a female
I just read in my book that the females don't have red on the crown and the juvenile they show has red on the top of his head and the male adult with red on the back of his neck.
So it looks like a bit of both here so he is probably a male .
They're not good photos he was too high up
Your right there Chocky, the female has no red on the head or neck. I'd guess it was a male as well
Nicer looking than the green Woodpecker. I did capture one last week but the filter on my camera made the lot all blend in so it wasn't nay good. I will be going up to Matt's in Yateley again soon so I hope to get a shot of one there. He has them in the garden all the time
Now that is one Woodpecker I would love to get the chance to photograph. I'm still hoping
The green Woodpecker?
It's a handsome bird With a red head. Not as pretty as the greater spotte.
I would like to see the Black Woodpecker
I have heard of the Lesser Spotted but not the Black Woodpecker
Yes the Black Woodpecker is all black and a red topped head . The female has just a spot of red at the back of it's head, again all black. The largest of the Woodpeckers. Found in much of Erurope
You're all wrong - it's the Baboon Woodpecker.... note the red bottom ;-)
More water needed with it
Good catch. You don't often see thes birds. I know they are in the park I have glimpsed them.
