Zeche Zollverein world heritage site
Been to this beautiful Bauhaus coal mine in Essen, Germany. It is simply beautiful. It's all cleaned up, and you can walk around it and get guided tours. Anyone ever in that area of Germany, go visit it.

It certainly looks impressive however I think it just signifies the difference between the two countries, in the UK we are so short of land this kind of mine would have been demolished made safe and used for housing I suspect.
Well, they surely done that with most of them here as well, but this one was built completely in the Bauhaus style, so they decided to keep it. While there, I went on top of the many hills in the area that consist of the rubble taken out of the mine, you get a nice view from it. They built a steel structure on top and you can blimb up for even better view of the Ruhr area.Originally Posted by topper
The alien pictures in the gravel are also a nice story, one day these images started to appear, and nobody knew who done them. Only after some months a man came forward and said he was the "artist". He was an unemployed guy, and he went up there at night and started to separate the different colours of the stones to make these images. They decided in the end to allow him to continue with it (it is against the law, you know, you can't have people making pictures in a national park without permits!!! Law and order!!!
And when I came down I found this very nice Bentley parked, which was worth a few pictures as well
I admire people with that sort patience, it certainly isn't like graffiti, as it is not permanent, at least they saw sense in the end.
The viewing structure is brilliant, more like something the French would build.
