Daytime Hedgehog

Spotted this little chap on my way out of Rotherwick, not so sure about his health.

He was wondering around late morning and didn't seem to be in any discomfort, but concerned about his eyes, they appeared to be covered with a discharge. He appeared to be able to see, as he managed to navigate into a small tunnel, but he doesn't look right.

He also seems to have a band of paint or similar on his back.

Well spotted rolf, but no his eyes don't look right do they, and to be out and about late morning is quite worrying, hopefully he will survive

Yes, wasn't anything I could do, as he/she still would have been difficult to catch, plus you never know whether he/she was foraging to feed youngsters..

thats a shame his eyes look a bit sore and they dont normally come out in the day unless they are very hungary or poorly......

Probably some one has used a weed killer and the poor little chap has come into contact with it

Not sure how to give a link to another site, Rolf, but if you Google 'Hessilhead', it will take you to that Wildlife Trust.

Then click on 'First Aid' at the top. The information at the foot of the page you get says, 'Injuries:- Strimmer injuries are often serious and irreparable. Abscesses are often associated with leg fractures and will usually have caused such damage that bones will not heal. Eye problems are common. A blind hedgehog can survive in the wild but may lose track of night and day.'

That may be a strimmer injury on his back, so he may have more problems than that with his eyesight. Poor little guy.

Don't think the mark on the back was an injury, just looked like a paint mark, he certainly seemed quite happy going about his business.
