The red bit is not a plant, but a parasite-caused growth on a rose plant. It is called Robin's pincushion.

It says there that it grows on wild roses, but I have had it grow in the garden on the smaller-leafed ones like Rosa Glauca.

I suppose that is because it is closest to a wild variety, although it has purple/grey leaves?

I see that David Austin sell it as a Wild Rose!http://www.davidaustinroses.co.uk/r-glauca

Looks lovely in any garden - and its thorns keep cats away!
