    Beautiful shot, Joe!

    I wonder why Mallards don't look after their broods as well as Geese do. In your shot, both parents are guarding their young. A female Mallard is usually left to do that all by herself, meaning that few young survive that first journey to (and on) water.

    What a lovely shot! As for being better parents - they also enlist 'kids' from the previous year to act as extra guardians, and can go about in multiple groups forming a 'creche'. So, Mallards are in need of some 'social services' help then

    There is a very large creche on Black Swan lake at Dinton Pastures.
    This is only a part of it (my lens was too long to get them all in.
